You are Indian if ---------
Your kids treat your friends/older relatives with respect and not contempt/neglect.
Your kids have the highest grades and lowest drug abuse/teenage pregnancy/drop-out rates in their school.
You consider paying your kid's college fees is much more important than buying that new BMW/diamond bracelet/6 bedroom house (for a familty of four,
with two living out).
You don't apply the "two is company, three is crowd" rule to your own children.
Your penchant for "personal space" doesn't translate into asking your parents/relations to stay in a motel when they come to visit.
The difference between your marriage and your funeral is obvious in the way the guests are dressed.
You are mature enough to realize that a gift registry (especially one at the most expensive store going around) is a tacky and underbred thing.
You don't expect gifts from guests at your wedding on the basis of "I am spending so much per plate on food, so much on flowers, so much on the
DJ.....so each of my guests should spend a proportionate amount on gifts".
You don't maintain a roster of invitations issued vs. invitations received - you realize that if you want to give a party you do so for your pleasure and
you call your friends, irrespective when they last invited you (and how elaborate or otherwise their menu was).
You realize that your parents would much rather have your company and a few less material comforts instead of a luxurious old-age home and no more
contact with you than a Christmas card.
I hope this is enough for starters. I know they are a large number of silly and pretentious things we do as a community. But perhaps it is time to focus
on the positives once in a while. With all our faults, we still have hearts and souls, not balance sheets in their place.
